Delray Rawlins, Terryn Fray and Stefan Kelly are three of the changes to the Bermuda team for the third and final leg of the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League B to be held in Jersey next month.

There are also changes to the coaching staff with Niraj Odedra, who was recently appointed head coach on a ten-week contract, taking over the team from Cal Waldron, the interim coach during the trip to Uganda.

However, Waldron has been retained as assistant coach while Elliot Wilson, the director of cricket, will also accompany the team along with Courtney Trott, who will be the team manager.

Bermuda took a second-string team to Uganda last month after several players were not available for the trip. They ended up losing all five matches.

Seven changes have been made to the team that travelled to Uganda, with the team led again by all-rounder Kamau Leverock who plays for Rode Park and Lawton in England.

Two other British-based players, Rawlins, of Sussex, and Kelly, of Newport, come in to strengthen the batting and bowling along with Fray, the Bailey’s Bay captain.

Also named in the squad of 14 are Willow Cuts pair Joseph Basden and Ras Solomon Burrows, Khiry Furbert, of Western Stars and Zeri Tomlinson, of Cleveland.

Missing from the last tour are the experienced Malachi Jones and Zeko Burgess along with Dalin Richardson, Amari Ebbin, Najiyah Raynor, Dennico Hollis and Jelani Richardson.

Cal Blankendal, the executive director for the Bermuda Cricket Board, has left the door open for Odedra to extend his contract with the board.

“Niraj is here until September 15, a pilot programme, and hopefully he enjoys the island, enjoys the culture and wants to come back,” Blankendal said.

“He does have a professional arrangement with his club in India, but he will make himself available to us after the interim period if he feels it is something he wants to commit to.

“Cal Waldron is still involved with the national team and he’ll be the assistant coach.

“This is about succession planning, taking the highest level of coaching we can get from overseas and making sure our local coaches and assistant coach, [Waldron], shadows him and gives his input since he was coach on the last tour.”

Wilson, a former county player with Worcestershire, is confident Odedra can have an impact on the national set-up in his short time as head coach.

“If Bermuda cricket wants to be fantastic, you’ve got the guy sitting here and there is nothing limiting what the national players can achieve with his guidance, so please use it,” Wilson said.

“We’re very lucky to be getting him when he’s 46 and not 66 and his off-season tied in very well with our domestic season. There is potential for this to be a long-term arrangement and even in his first week he’s made a really good impression.”

The director of cricket also urged players to come on board with the national programme which still does not have some of the top players available for selection.

“I would love the players to get on board with what we’re trying to achieve,“ Wilson said.

“We’re trying to drive forward more corporate involvement and this might become a big deal if we involve India as well.”

The team will leave for Jersey on July 31.
