Summer foods that will give you an energy boost

Coffee and other caffeinated beverages offer a quick energy boost but it won’t last the day. The best way to get energy is in the food we eat

I think we’re all looking for more energy every day but we are used to getting it from the wrong sources.

We drink coffee and other caffeinated beverages that offer a quick boost that won’t last throughout the day; the best way to get energy is to consume it in the foods we eat.

This summer, let’s aim to get more energy from food and less from stimulating beverages. Below are a few of my favourite, naturally energising foods for you to try:

1. Avocados

Avocados are full of healthy fats as well as electrolytes and potassium, which help to promote healthy muscle function and hydration. Avocados are also used for inflammation and maintaining healthy blood sugar.

2. Watermelon

Watermelon is perfect for the summer and a delicious way to hydrate! Watermelon is often overlooked and thought to be too sweet. However, it’s actually a wonderful source of electrolytes, which are important for fluid balance and overall hydration during our hot, humid summer months.

3. Leafy greens

I really enjoy leafy greens in the summer. Spinach is one leafy green that helps to lower body temperature because of its high water content. Spinach and other leafy greens contain potassium and magnesium, both hydrating and energising for muscles.

4. Citrus fruits

Citrus fruits are full of water, which assist in promoting energy because they’re full of hydration. They are also a rich source of vitamin C, which is helpful with iron absorption.

5. Sweet potatoes

Sweet potatoes are a healthy starch and easily digestible. They also contain fibre that promotes healthy digestion. The fibre and the starch in the sweet potatoes help to promote energy but also help to prevent blood sugar spikes. Sweet potatoes also contain carotenoids, which naturally prevent sunburn and sun damage.

6. Cucumbers

Cucumbers are another juicy favourite energising veggie because they contain mostly water and are naturally hydrating. They are very versatile and refreshing in salads or alone.

7. Spicy peppers

Hot peppers are super energising because they can assist in revving up your metabolism and may also make you sweat – a little natural detoxification. Just don’t eat them before a run so you aren’t running to the nearest bathroom.

8. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are packed with energising potassium that’s also hydrating. They also contain carotenoids and lycopene, which helps your body naturally protect itself from the sun from the inside out.
