Kempe finishes second at Youth Sailing World Championships
Sebastian Kempe finished second in the male dinghy one-person class at the Youth Sailing World Championships in The Hague, Netherlands, while Nicole Stovell was 23rd overall in the female dinghy class.
Kempe finished with 31 points in the seven-race series, level with Ole Schweckendiek, of Germany, both just a point behind class winner, Rocco Wright, of Ireland, in the closest of battles for the title.
Kempe was leading after winning the first two races, after Wright could only manage a seventeenth-place finish in the second race to go with his second place in the opening race.
However, he was able to discard that finish and then added four top-ten finishes (fourth, seventh, seventh, fourth) while Kempe lost his grip on the top spot with two eleventh and two eighth-place finishes before closing strongly with a second in the final race.
Schweckendiek got back in contention with three fifth-place finishes in the fifth, sixth and seventh races after earlier recording finishes of eighth, second, 29th and sixth. There were 61 competitors in the male race.
Stovell finished on 128 net points for her 23rd finish among a field of 56 competitors.
She had finishes of 22nd, 23rd, 29th, fifth, 35th and fourteenth in the seven races before a black flag disqualification under rule 30.4 in the final race earned her 57 points which she discarded as her worst result.
First among the women was Eve McMahon on nine net points as Ireland completed the double. McMahon finished comfortably ahead of Evie Saunders, of Australia, on 24 points.
Saunders won the first race and then followed up with a seventh, second, tenth, second, eighth and fourth as McMahon’s four wins made the difference.
