Charity hosting community event on drugs and gangs
A charity has teamed up with the police and an addiction treatment organisation to hold an event to discuss issues including drugs and grooming methods used by gangs.
Raleigh Bermuda is hosting the event in partnership with the Bermuda Police Service and Pathways Bermuda at Warwick Seventh Day Adventist Church hall on Sunday.
The presentation, entitled Drugs, Gangs and Corner Boys. Is my Child Being Recruited?, will address issues such as violence and antisocial behaviour among Bermuda’s young people, grooming methods used by gangs to recruit young people and what drugs are the most popular and easily accessible to the island’s young people.
Behavioural therapist and Raleigh Bermuda project manager Justin Cann, who has more than a decade’s worth of experience working within youth development, will serve as moderator for the presentation.
It will feature talks and discussions from Dany Pen, former commissioner of human rights in Bermuda and executive director of Raleigh Bermuda, and Pc Khalid Pitcher, who is attached to the Bermuda Police Service’s gang-targeting unit.
Internationally certified alcohol and drug counsellor Camily Lovell, who recently joined Pathways Bermuda as a consultant addictions counsellor, will also speak at the event.
Raleigh Bermuda serves more than 200 people aged between 14 and 35. It fosters and nurtures relationships to support young people as they grow into adulthood and helps them to become leaders in their communities.
The event is free, but an RSVP is required. Call 333-5678 or e-mail info@raleigh.bm. The talks will begin at 6pm.
