Two more people have died after they became infected by the coronavirus, it was announced yesterday.

Figures released by the Government showed that 205 results were positive from tests carried out between last Tuesday and yesterday.

There are 263 recorded active cases on the island.

Jason Hayward, the acting Minister of Health, said: “Unfortunately, Bermuda has had another two coronavirus-related deaths.

“This is sad news, and I extend sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.”

The Ministry of Health received 4,146 results from tests carried out from July 19 to 25, giving a positivity rate of 5 per cent.

A spokeswoman said that 16 people were in hospital – down two from the update last Wednesday – with no one in intensive care.

She added that 111 of the new cases were from overseas, 59 were infected on the island and 35 were under investigation.

The spokeswoman said: “Additionally, there were 247 recoveries.”

She added: “Since March 2020, Bermuda has recorded 17,193 coronavirus cases, out of which 16,786 have recovered, and sadly there have been 144 coronavirus-related deaths.”

Mr Hayward said: “Please remember that Covid-19 remains a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, which the World Health Organisation has reconfirmed.

“Over the Cup Match weekend, please follow the following advice to reduce the possibility of getting infected with the coronavirus.

“Wash or sanitise your hands regularly. If possible, maintain physical distance from others, especially if they have cold-like symptoms.

“You should hold events outside or, if held inside, try to ensure it is a well-ventilated space.

“Please take an antigen test before going to Cup Match or any other event, especially if you have any symptoms – sore throat, body aches and headaches, and also blocked or runny nose, cough, hoarse voice, sneezing, fatigue and muscle aches.

“If you choose to do so, wear a quality, well-fitted mask for extra protection.

“Event organisers should have hand sanitiser available for patrons.

“Stay home if you test positive or if you have symptoms.”

He added: “Have a wonderful, Covid-safe Cup Match holiday weekend.”
