Five high-performing male students are to compete for scholarships at the 2022 Alpha Beautillion this week.

Judah Smith-Dyer of CedarBridge Academy, Jordan Smith of Chatmore British International Academy, Ajani Robinson of Mount Saint Agnes Academy, AJ Smith of The Berkeley Institute and Trey Vance of Impact Mentoring Academy were shortlisted for the event being hosted by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity’s Bermuda chapter.

During the “male rite of passage ceremony”, the high school students will demonstrate their public speaking skills, talents and community service activities.

A spokesman for the Alpha Beautillion said: “This programme began in March and included volunteer work with Keep Bermuda Beautiful, monthly mentoring meetings, personal development seminars conducted by Belco, MediaMaya, Bermuda Toastmaster Club and Deloitte, and various other team building activities.

“The programme culminates with the Alpha Beautillion competition, with the cumulative scores of the prejudging for the six-month period prior and the tally of the scores from the final night added to decide the winner.”

All participating students will receive a bursary award with the winner receiving the top prize of $5,000.

Sponsors include Sun Life International and the Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation.

The 2022 Alpha Beautillion committee includes Jonathan Tankard, chairman, Dantae Williams, Zuri Darrell, Jecoa Burrows, John Duncan, Anthony Wade, Quennel Robinson, Tejour Riley and C Michael Wellman.

Vincent Darrell of Saltus was last year named the twentieth winner of the programme.

The event is due to take place at the Ruth Seaton James Centre for the Performing Arts at CedarBridge Academy on Thursday. Tickets are $35 or $75 for patrons, and can be purchased online at www.gpass.bm
