Four more deaths linked to Covid-19 have brought the island’s total fatalities during the pandemic to 148, health officials revealed last night.

But confirmed active cases of the virus have dropped to 196, with eight people in hospital for the illness. None are in intensive care, and 226 people have recovered.

The remaining cases of Covid-19 are under public health monitoring.

The latest figures came as the island logged 163 new cases out of 4,376 test results – yielding a test positivity rate of 4 per cent.

At the last update on July 26, the island reported two coronavirus-related deaths, with active cases standing at 263.

Ayo Oyinloye, the chief medical officer, warned last week on the eve of the Cup Match holiday that the festivities and large gatherings at the match could fuel an increase in cases of the virus in the coming weeks.

Kim Wilson, the health minister, urged the community to continue following public health guidance.

“We are not out of the woods yet with this pandemic,” she said. “To avoid getting infected, wear a face mask and wash and sanitise your hands regularly.

“Maintain a six-foot physical distance from others. Importantly, ensure there is proper ventilation when you are indoors.

“Fresh air ventilation is essential for any building or internal space and protects all of us from infections such as Covid. Increase fresh air ventilation wherever possible when indoors.”
