In the right place at the right time
Dear Sir,
Between 1996 and 1998, I was in Port Washington Yacht Club on Long Island with a sailing buddy of mine. He introduced me to a lady who was the daughter of the main contractor for the building of the Kindley Air Force Base. She had numerous black and white photographs of the base being built, which had been covered by the Official Secrets Act. Fifty years on, she said she was able to disclose them.
She did not know what to do with them. Her children were not interested and she was talking of throwing them out. I asked her if I could take possession of them and put them in the Bermuda Archives. She wanted to think about it. Five years later, I finally got hold of the photographs and presented them to Alex Scott, who was the Premier at that time. They were placed in the archives and have been brought back to good condition. Anyone interested in these photographs can get a viewing at the archives in St David's, just down by the police station.
Edward Harris PhD did an article some years ago in the Mid-Ocean News on my findings. I was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time!
