Tuff Dogs’ unbeaten run halted by CV Chargers
Makeshift opener Nik Lawton-Misra ended Tuff Dogs' ten-match unbeaten run with a blistering century that saw the losing captain forced off with a painful injury as pumped-up CV Chargers romped home by 45 runs in the Evening Cricket League.
But Tuff Dogs later regained momentum to open up a six-point lead at the top of group two by beating KPMG by 64 runs as in-form all-rounder Justin Corday clubbed a 23-ball 66 and then snapped up three wickets to seal the points.
KPMG had earlier defeated De Wicketest by ten wickets, while West XI beat PHC for the second time in a week.
Renegades, league champions for the past two seasons, forged a six-point lead in group one after their captain, Ryan Miller, led from the front with 80, but Fine Leg Byes' Jamal Holder's 67 gave them a scare before they eased home by 14 runs.
Promoted in the absence of regular opener Piers Carr, Lawton-Misra smashed 11 sixes and five fours, taking a heavy toll on the Tuff Dogs' attack and their captain, Terence Corday, as he found the perfect ally in Matty Watson, whose 65 helped push CV Chargers beyond 200.
It was the club's fourth century of the season – Carr earlier hitting two and Watson, the captain, one.
"Yeah, they killed us. Nik smashed it everywhere, including the inside of my ankle," said Corday, who was carted off in the third over after Lawton-Misra drove a ball back at him while he was bowling.
McLaren Lowe (41) and Trevor Corday (35) led a spirited reply, but Chargers' 206 for two proved beyond their reach, closing on 161 for five, as Lawton-Misra and Watson teamed up again to torment Tuff Dogs with the ball, taking two for 27 and two for 37 respectively.
Somers Carr, who made 23 not out, hailed "another quality win for the boys".
He said: "With Piers [Carr] off the island, we put in Nik to open the batting and, boy, did he not disappoint.
"It was an absolutely stellar performance with sixes raining down every over and setting our new team highest individual score.
"We knew that 206 was going to be a tough score to chase down, but with the [Shelly Bay] grass short and the outfield as dry as a bone, we didn't want to rest on our laurels.
"Tuff Dogs were in the hunt early on in their innings, but after a few key wickets and with their required run rate creeping towards 20 runs an over, we felt pretty safe by the 12-over mark and ended up winning quite comfortably."
Renegades have been forced to reshape their top order after Jayde Albertze, their dashing opener, made the decision to throw in his lot with Somerset, unable to compete in both leagues as he is under 40.
Miller and Riaan Engelbrecht, the new opening pair, almost repeated their century stand against The Associates the previous week, their partnership worth 95 in a total of 154 for four as Engelbrecht chipped in with 36.
Miller said: "Fine Leg Byes batted well and were up with the required rate for most of their innings, but we managed to bowl them out in the final over. Pick of our bowlers were Nathan Clarke with three for 15 and Stephan Smit with three for 35."
After their ten-wicket win over De Wicketest, Michael Campbell, the KPMG captain, said: "With three wins in the last four games, we have an outside chance of making the cup play-offs, so hopefully we will be up there come the end of the season."
Daniel Lourens and Steffin Du Preez claimed three wickets each and Matt Harling and Srijan Shegal two apiece as KPMG dismissed De Wicketest for 83 before openers Alistair Lynch (45 not out) and Dan Roy (36 not out) galloped to their target in 8.3 overs.
"Special mention should go to our wicketkeeper Paul Botes, who took four catches, including an acrobatic diving catch," Campbell said.
In the defeat against Tuff Dogs, Lynch (33) and Roy (30) put on 55 for the first wicket, but the KPMG innings petered out to close on 113 for six as Justin Corday returned figures of three for 29 after he had hammered seven sixes and four fours in his 66 which, allied with Trevor Corday's 42 and an unbeaten 29 from No 4 McLaren Lowe, lifted the total to 177 for five.
West XI, who beat PHC by 28 runs last week, completed a quick double, beating their opponents by 59 runs after Jim West, the captain, steered his side to 141 for six. Donald Smith, who was on a hat-trick at one stage, then took three for 23 to help dismiss PHC for 82 in reply.
