Volunteers took to the Warwick Railway Trail yesterday in an effort to clean up litter and waste.

A spokesman for the community group Bermuda is Love said six people lent a hand for the cleanup, which took place on the Camp Hill/Riddell’s Bay area of the Trail.

“We collected three bags of recyclables and four black bags of regular trash,” the spokesman said.

“We found beer bottles, tin cans and bottles, plastic bottles, chip bags, candy wrappers, a VHS player, books, clothing items, car parts, metal parts, and various other pieces of broken down trash.”

The charity has been organising monthly trash cleanups across the island for the past two years as part of an effort to raise awareness and actively confront environmental issues such as pollution, illegal dumping, microplastics and climate change.

“We all have a responsibility to protect the environment,” the spokesman added.

“By picking up a plastic bag or a glass bottle we can help protect wildlife and our ecosystem, and by working together to clean up our beaches, neighbourhoods, and parks we can demonstrate pride for our community.”

The spokesman added: “Further, we advocate for the right to live in a healthy environment; to live in a clean, safe, and sustainable community.

“Trash cleanups help to remind us that we should value nature not by how it may benefit us, but rather as having value in itself.

“By doing so, we can create a future that allows our children to inherit and value a healthy and sustainable Bermuda.”

The group thanked Keep Bermuda Beautiful for their support in providing bags, gloves, grabbers and organising the collected trash to be picked up.
