A teenage environmental campaigner has been awarded a scholarship to study in Canada.

Kristy Sanchez Vega, who was a Bermuda High School pupil, will work towards a Bachelor of Science in Biological Biomedical and Life Sciences at McGill University in Montreal.

The 18-year-old has been awarded the McGill Bermuda Scholarship 2022.

A spokeswoman for the trust that provides the scholarship said that Ms Sanchez Vega is finishing an internship at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences.

She added that the young woman “distinguished herself in completing the International Baccalaureate Diploma with the highest distinctions, scoring a perfect 45”.

The McGill Bermuda Scholarship Trust spokeswoman said: “Ms Sanchez Vega studied biology, economics and English at higher level, and French, mathematics and chemistry at standard level.

“Prior to undertaking the IB programme of study, Ms Sanchez Vega successfully completed 12 IGCSEs with top scores.

“Ms Sanchez Vega’s commitment to environmental and social activism is noteworthy.

“She has been active within the Bermuda Zoological Society as well as within Greenrock Bermuda.

“She also intends to continue her work in environmental and social advocacy with the McGill Students for Greenpeace, and Sustain McGill.”

Ms Sanchez Vega added: “It is an honour to be selected for this scholarship, and from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

“It was a pleasure to meet and talk with the selection committee and receive such a warm welcome to the McGill Bermuda community. I am privileged to know I am taking a seat among you all.”

She said: “It is in my nature to work hard to repay those who have helped me get to where I am, so there is no doubt I will do the same for this scholarship.

“Myself and my family are very grateful to you, the selection committee and the trustees of the award.”

Ms Sanchez Vega looks forward to being part of the McGill University campus and intends to pursue a career in research

The McGill Bermuda Scholarship Trust was set up in 1989 and offers the Dudley and Deborah Butterfield Scholarship and the McGill Bermuda Graduates Scholarship in alternate years.

Each awards the student C$9,000 (about $6,925) a year for up to four years of study in a degree programme at McGill University.
