Plans to build a Bermuda marquee on the Hamilton waterfront have been given the go-ahead by the Department of Planning.

A planning application, submitted by the City of Hamilton this year, proposed a brightly coloured 40ft-by-5ft BERMUDA sign next to the Bermuda Visitors Centre on Front Street.

The installation, designed by Keeon Minors of Lead x Design, beat dozens of other proposals in a public competition as a part of last year’s VIVID: Public Art Initiative.

According to planning documents, the Department of Planning said the installation would be a positive addition to the city’s waterfront.

A report by a planning officer said: “The proposed location offers the general public opportunities to explore this area of the waterfront and to photograph themselves at the marquee sign with views of Hamilton Harbour and White’s Island in the background.

“It is also considered that the proposal would not constrain any major development proposals for the waterfront that may come forward in the future.

“As to the proposed lighting of the marquee sign, it is deemed acceptable given its location, not in proximity to any residences and illuminating a feature after dark so it can continue to be enjoyed as an art feature.”

The report noted that the project would result in the loss of some parking spaces in the location, but the cycle parking was rarely at capacity and there were ample parking spaces near by.
