Motorists were reminded on Wednesday to use signals as warnings for other drivers.

“Signal early” is the Bermuda Road Safety Council’s slogan for September.

In a statement, the council stressed the importance of using indicators on Bermuda’s roads.

“Turn signals allow drivers to visually warn other drivers when they are making a turn or changing lanes,” the statement read. “Too often while travelling on our roads we see instances of vehicles turning without giving warning to other drivers.”

While signalling early is important, the council reminded drivers not to turn or signal until they knew it was safe to do so.

The statement continued: “It is advised that indicators are turned on three to five seconds before the driver has to turn. Having an indicator on for too long can be a hazard so always make sure you turn your indicators off after completing your manoeuvre.

“By communicating with vehicles that are both behind and in front of you, you’re doing your part to keep everyone safe on the road.”

The council encouraged all drivers to not drink and drive, reduce their speeds and exercise caution on the roads.
