Widower's poignant return to couple’s favourite holiday spot – Bermuda
A couple’s enduring six-year bond with Bermuda was poignantly celebrated in the monthly travel magazine Travel + Leisure by a devotee of the island who returned after losing his wife to cancer.
Matthew Monagan’s elegy to Dhanushka, his late wife, is framed in a nostalgic Bermuda visit, retracing locations he last enjoyed with her.
After Losing My Wife, I Travelled Back to Our Favourite Vacation Spot, published last Sunday, describes “healing through travel” on an island originally frequented by the author in family trips and business.
Mr Monagan calls Bermuda his “favourite place”, adding: “The water, the people, and the solitude brought me a comfort and calmness I haven’t really found anywhere else.”
Meeting Dhanushka in 2014, he vowed to bring her to Bermuda the next year — pointing out the changing colours of the ocean from the air, and walking her through the sights of Front Street.
The couple came back many times to the island.
Returning after her death, Mr Monagan “felt a warmth I hadn’t felt in months”.
“The island’s sparkling waters — surrounding me on both sides — seemed to wrap me up and take me in.
“The friendly cabby’s Bermudian accent welcomed me back. I could feel the soft breeze on my face.”
He describes swimming, renting a Twizy, driving to the Swizzle Inn and returning to walk Front Street.
The Hamilton Princess Hotel was scene of the couple’s last stay in Bermuda, for his wife’s 28th birthday — a year after her cancer was diagnosed.
Returning there, Mr Monagan writes: “I went outside in the dark with a drink, looking at the lights flickering across Hamilton Harbour and listening to the docked boats gently move back and forth with the tide.
“You could feel the stars without even staring up at the sky, much brighter here than back home in Brooklyn.”
Describing biking the Railway Trail and golfing at Port Royal, the author takes in the scenes of Bermuda for a publication that calculates its readership at 6.1 million.
Cooper’s Island, an early stop in the couple’s first visit, is revisited.
The East End beauty spot was scene to “one of the best days of our lives”.
Finishing his day walking an unnamed lane into Hamilton, the author writes: “I felt good. It felt good to be back.”
