Drewonde Bascome maintains Devonshire’s winning streak

Left delighted: Rudell Pitcher was full of praise for his Devonshire Rec players after sealing a 30-run victory over Somerset Bridge

Wellington Oval: (Devonshire won toss) Devonshire Rec beat Somerset Bridge by 30 runs.

A rejuvenated Devonshire Rec outfit stretched their winning streak to four games with a comfortable 30-run victory over Somerset Bridge at Wellington Oval.

The win was in thanks largely to a team high unbeaten 60 from their in-form batsman, Drewonde Bascome. His innings was brutal as he muscled the ball over the boundary for a total of six sixes and one four to lead his team to a respectable total of 169 from 20 overs.

Ankoma Cannonier (44) and Darwin Adams (20) laid the foundation with a first-wicket partnership of 51 as Devonshire were 70 for two after ten overs.

Once Bascome reached the crease, the run rate increased with his hard hitting and, ably assisted by Lorenzo Simmons (17), the two put on an unbeaten fifth-wicket partnership worth 76 runs to close out the Devonshire innings.

Donnie Charles had the best bowling figures for Bridge claiming one wicket for only nine runs.

In defence of their score, Devonshire opened with spin at one end and medium pace at the other.

Pacer, Lamont Brangman tricked Neil Thakur with a slower one which caught him swinging in mid-air and was bowled for 12 from a healthy 35-run opening stand with captain Shane Hollis.

The two opening bowlers had contained the batters and were therefore left unchanged to see out their allotment of eight overs.

The score was 41-1 after eight overs with Bridge well behind the required run rate.

Captain Hollis hung around for a well-played 25 but was bowled by first change, Lorenzo Simmons trying to push the score. Simmons claimed his second wicket in his second over as he had Donnie Charles caught at long on by Derek DeChabert for 19 going for a big hit.

At this stage, the required rate was 11 runs an over from the remaining ten.

The Devonshire bowlers had handcuffed the Bridge batting and with the win imminent, Devonshire handed Tarik Jennings the ball to bowl the last over to Jason Smith who greeted him with a rude awakening walloping 20 runs from his bat to finish with a team high 31 and the score more respectable at 139 for six as the overs ran out.

Dion Ball was the pick of the Devonshire bowlers with figures of two for 12. Simmons claimed two for 37.

Player-coach Rudell Pitcher had high praise for his team.

“The guys are just enjoying the game with everybody pitching in,” he said. “We picked up Lorenzo Simmons from evening cricket and he is doing things with the bat and ball so it’s helping the team to gel.

“Most of Bermudian batsmen cannot handle spin so I thought it was wise to open with a spinner and a medium pacer to keep them off balance and it worked in our favour today.”
