A serving police officer remains suspended on full pay after being arrested for an alleged criminal offence two months ago.

Darrin Simons, the Commissioner of Police, told The Royal Gazette yesterday that the male officer was arrested on July 28 and was suspended, with pay, for alleged gross misconduct.

He would not give details of the alleged crime.

Mr Simons said the Police (Conduct) Orders 2016 required that all suspensions had to be with full pay.

The commissioner added: “I fully appreciate the public will want to know more about this matter and rightly so; it involves criminal allegations against a serving police officer.

“But, as charges have yet to be laid, it is not appropriate to release any more information at this time.”

The case is the latest involving criminal allegations against a serving police officer.

In June, former officer Jermari Belboda, 27, was given a suspended prison sentence for a sexual assault on a woman colleague committed while he worked for the Bermuda Police Service.

A month before, former policewoman Lakila Hart, 29, was given a six-month suspended jail sentence after admitting abuse of power and offering to supply drugs while a serving officer.

The Gazettereported last December that almost half of Bermuda’s police officers had been investigated for alleged wrongdoing in the past three years. The majority of complaints were resolved or dismissed.
