Delon Armitage has been announced as one of the latest big names set to sprinkle some stardust on the World Rugby Classic.

Armitage, who featured in the Classic in 2019, will return to the island to head up the Classic Lions squad as the event returns to North Field at the National Sports Centre next week.

After being capped a total of 26 times for England from 2008 to 2012, Armitage’s international career was curtailed when he moved to France to play for Toulon, for whom he scored the only try of the match when when they won Europe’s biggest competition, the Heineken Cup, in 2013.

He made 103 appearances for the French side after appearing 165 times for London Irish and he and his brother Steffon became the ninth pair of siblings to play for England.

Playing alongside Armitage for the Classic Lions is former Wales international Scott Andrews, who won 14 caps for his country, and Ireland’s David Corkery, who played for his national team on 27 occasions.

Argentina Legends, who won the Rugby Classic three times in a row between 2017 and 2019, have also named a strong squad as they attempt to reclaim the crown.

Gonzalo Tiesi is one of their star names. He was capped 38 times for his country at centre from 2005 to 2011 and featured at the Sevens World Cup in 2007 in New Zealand, where Argentina finished third.

Other former internationals include Julio Farias Cabello, capped 30 times from 2010 to 2013, Manuel Carizza, who featured in 44 internationals at lock, Bernardo Stortoni, capped on 26 occasions over a ten-year period from 1998, and Eusebio Guinazu, who featured 36 times for the national side.

Italian Ramiro Pez will be a name familiar to avid rugby fans and his particiaption is sure to excite. One of his country’s most well-known performers, he scored 260 points during his 40-match international career.

Pez played domestically in Italy, France and England, most notably with Leicester and Toulon and scored more than 1000 points in his club career.

The Italian side looks particularly strong with their numbers bolstered by Giovanbattista Venditti, who represented his country 44 times and Quintin Geldenhuys, who was born in South Africa but capped 67 times by Italy at lock.

Jamie Cudmore will be among Canada's big hitters. He made 43 appearances for the senior national team and featured in four World Cups.

He’ll be joined by John Moonlight, who represented his country in Rugby Sevens, including at HSBC World Series tournaments, three Commonwealth Games and winning two gold medals at the Pan Am Games.

Canada’s team will also feature exciting scrum-half Phil Mack and Brodie Henderson, who represented the country at the prestigious Hong Kong Sevens tournament.
