Musical comedy embracing ‘the wackiness in every family’ opens

A musical comedy that “embraces the wackiness in every family” opened for its first of 11 shows last night.

The Addams Family, staged by the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Bermuda, will run at the Earl Cameron Theatre in City Hall.

A synopsis on the production group’s Facebook page said: “It will be a full-scale extravaganza with show-stopping musical numbers that will appeal to audiences young and old with a story of love and friendship through adversity with a comical and macabre spin.

“With a talented production team featuring both overseas and local professionals, G & S Bermuda is confident that The Addams Family will deliver a spectacular theatre experience.”

Characters including Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday and Pugsley Addams, as well as Uncle Fester, Grandma and Lurch are in the latest story.

The synopsis added: “Wednesday Addams is the ultimate princess of darkness, who is now all grown up.

“However, she has a shocking secret that only Gomez knows – she has fallen in love with a sweet young man from a respectable family that her parents have never met.

“And if that wasn’t upsetting enough, Wednesday, having confided in her father, begs him not to tell her mother.

“Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before – keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia.

“The magnificently macabre family is put to the test when the outsiders come to dinner, in an ultimate meet-the-parents, hurling them into a night that will change their lives for ever.”

The show was written by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, authors of the multi-award winning hit Jersey Boys, while the music and lyrics were by the Tony Award-nominated Andrew Lippa.
