Thousands show up for Gombey Festival at Botanical Gardens
It was billed as an event that would “keep the tradition alive”.
That’s exactly what thousands of Bermudians did yesterday when they showed up for the Bermuda Gombey Festival at the Botanical Gardens in Paget.
Residents flocked to the park to soak up the sunshine and immerse themselves in a pool of Bermuda culture. Food trucks did a roaring trade.
It was also an opportunity to recognise Gombey troupes for the work they do in bringing the community together — an opportunity not allowed in the past two years because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The evening began with presentations to five Gombey organisations recognised for their longevity.
Place’s New Generation Gombeys are celebrating their 65th anniversary this year, while H&H Gombeys has been in existence for 28 years.
Warwick Gombeys was set up in 1999, while the Gombey Warriors and Gombey Evolution Troupe formed more recently.

After the presentation of certificates by culture officer Kim Dismont Robinson, the thump of music began.
City of Hamilton town crier Ed Christopher MC’d the event, which was also attended by David Burt, the Premier, and his family.
Shanee Robinson, 17, summed up the event: “ I’m loving it. The vibe, the music, the culture. It’s why we’re here.”
Earlier, Ernest Peets, the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sports, described the Gombey movement as “an iconic symbol” of Bermuda.
Dr Peets said: “The history of the Gombey is reflective of Bermuda’s cultural heritage and our Gombeys are Bermuda’s most recognisable and iconic cultural symbol.
“After a two-year hiatus, we are delighted to welcome back the Gombey Festival, which has grown considerably over the years. And this weekend we hope to see as many people as possible supporting these events.”
