Island’s karate stars showcase talent in ShotoCup Kata Classic
Bermuda’s Karate community converged on the Whitney Institute to compete in the third annual ShotoCup Kata Classic on Sunday.
The event featured 20 divisions of competitors ranging in age from five to 65 years old.
The day began with opening remarks from Kiyoshi Arnold Allen, the Bermuda Karate Federation Technical Director, who has studied and practised the discipline for more than 55 years.
The event culminated with the Black Belt Combine where Andre Joseph impressively displayed both strength and precision while performing a traditional Goju-Ryu Kata after returning to the sport following a four-year hiatus.
ShotoCup has two additional events scheduled for this year, a competitive kumite seminar attended by Brian Hillard of Team USA on November 27 at Six Parliament Street and the Bermuda Kazumi Karate Open on December 18 at the Whitney Institute, Outerbridge Hall.
