Paget Lions secure first win since rejoining BFA ranks
Paget Lions let out a mighty roar after clinching a first win on their return to the Bermuda Football Association ranks with an emphatic 7-0 thrashing of Somerset Eagles at Southampton Oval last Saturday.
Paget jumped out to an early lead and never looked back after Kushae Hypolite opened the scoring in the fourth minute before player-coach Antwan Russell doubled Paget’s advantage just a few minutes later.
Shakir Smith made it 3-0 in the 39th minute to send his team into the break in full control and the match virtually over as a contest.
Russell grabbed his second in the 54th minute as the second period continued in the same vein. Wahhaj Shakir then struck twice in the 69th and 84th minutes before Demarlo Curtis rounded off the scoring in the 90th minute.
In the remaining match of a double header at Southampton Oval on Saturday, hosts Southampton Rangers came from behind to thump ten-men BAA 5-2.
Riley Robinson put the visitors ahead in the seventh minute but their lead was short-lived as Ricardo Lowe equalised two minutes later.
BAA suffered another setback in the 22nd minute when Jaidyn Robinson was shown a straight red card and Rangers cashed in on their numerical advantage when Akale Bean scored six minutes later to put them ahead for the first time.
Despite being a man short, BAA got back on level terms when Robinson grabbed his second goal in the 35th minute to leave the game wide open at the half.
The hosts eventually pulled away during the second period to secure the points after Bean converted his second to put Rangers ahead 3-2 in the 72nd minute.
Jahni Bean doubled the hosts advantage six minutes later before Isaiah Taylor pounced in the 86th minute to put the match further beyond BAA’s reach.
In Sunday’s matches, league leaders Young Men’s Social Club and Wolves both kept their unbeaten streaks intact.
Social Club beat Ireland Rangers 4-2 at Police Field with Ryan Parris leading the charge with a hat-trick.
Parris netted in the tenth, fifteenth and 35th minutes to place the hosts firmly in the driver’s seat.
Tahj Wade pulled one back for the visitors in the 51st minute before Brighton Swan restored Social Club’s three-goal advantage six minutes later.
Ireland Rangers grabbed a second through Jahni Ratteray in the 81st minute.
In contrast, Wolves endured a tougher outing against Devonshire Colts in the Devonshire derby at Wellington Oval.
Morricko Iris put Wolves’ noses in front in the eleventh minute before Keino Burch brought the teams level in the 25th minute.
Samario Valasse-Paul grabbed Wolves’s winner in the 67th minute to seal the deal.
