Film documents mistreatment of animals by fashion industry
The cruel treatment of animals in the fashion industry is the focus of a documentary being screened on Saturday.
Slay is the final feature of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute’s free, climate-focused film series.
It follows film-maker Rebecca Cappelli as she investigates the fur, wool and leather fashion industry’s “greenwashing” — marketing that dishonestly claims environmentally friendly practices — and cruel treatment of animals.
A spokeswoman for BUEI said: “Released last month, Slay asks an important question: is it ever acceptable to kill animals for fashion?
“From Europe to China, Slay spans five continents as it uncovers the unethical practices of the fashion industry on a global scale, emphasising the horrific ways the animals are kept and killed, all in the name of fashion and profit.
“The documentary features interviews with animal welfare and sustainability experts as well as representatives from the fur industry itself.”
After the film, there will be a facilitated discussion with Ms Cappelli, who spent the past three years investigating animal skins in fashion, examining the impact on people, the environment and animals.
Ms Cappelli said: “If someone would have told me even half of what I discovered doing this film, I wouldn’t have believed it.”
Slay is suitable for anyone over the age of 10. It will be shown at BUEI from 3pm.
