A man fighting for his life against stage 4 prostate cancer said that his fundraiser collected more than $3,000 in two weeks.

But George Scott-Smith, 56, admitted that he did not think he would be able to get treatment in Turkey as he had planned.

Mr Scott-Smith said he was initially concerned “people didn’t want to give back to a worthy cause”.

He added: “I know I did this to myself, but does this mean I should just die?”

Despite this, Mr Scott-Smith said that he was not disappointed in the amount of money received – and that he was in fact grateful for what he did get.

He said: “It makes me feel like God is on my side.”

Mr Scott-Smith added: “I don’t want to toot my own horn, but a lot of people know me from the important work I’ve done.”

Mr Scott-Smith was speaking after he appealed to the public last week to help him raise $35,000 for life-saving treatment.

He planned to travel to the ChemoThermia Oncology Centre in Istanbul, Turkey, where he could receive metabolically-supported chemotherapy, which combines radiation treatment with dietary changes to weaken the tumours’ metabolic rates.

Mr Scott-Smith told The Royal Gazette that he had originally sought treatment in West Palm Beach in Florida to keep the cancer at bay and was now in Huntsville, Alabama, to receive further treatment.

He added that this treatment was more affordable and therefore something he felt more comfortable taking in the long term.

Mr Scott-Smith encouraged others to find ways to give back to their community, whether that be through donating to charitable causes or social activism.

He added that he hope to be back on his feet and do return to social activism.

Mr Scott-Smith said: “I don’t believe in just sitting around and doing nothing – there are a lot of people who stand around and do nothing and I don’t want to be that.”
