Buy a block for Christmas – and help fix a home
A “wall” of cement blocks is perhaps an unlikely festive window display for a Front Street shop.
But the building materials have been used to decorate the Habitat ReStore as part of its Christmas campaign.
Sheelagh Cooper, the chairwoman of Habitat for Humanity of Bermuda, said that the fundraising drive was called “Buy a Block, Fix a Home, Build Hope”.
She added: “Behind the wall of blocks is a tree that sports 20 little houses each representing one finished project in 2022.
“For a donation people can 'buy a block’ and help us help those in need to spend their Christmas in a safe and secure home.”
The Bermuda charity is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, which was founded in the US in 1976.
Its website said: “Since its inception, Habitat International has built and renovated more than 400,000 homes with families in need all around the world.”
It added: “Increasingly Bermudian families, often those including either young children or the elderly, are struggling to maintain their homes and consequently are living in unsafe, substandard or unhealthy environments.
“The mission of Habitat Bermuda is to assist those living in derelict conditions to make home improvements that will ensure that every Bermudian may live in a safe, secure and healthy home.”
Ms Cooper said yesterday: “Unlike other Habitat affiliates who build with wood, of course we build with cement block so we thought that was a great way for people to contribute by purchasing – figuratively speaking of course – a block.”
She revealed last month that the Bermuda organisation completed a record 18 projects in eight months – compared with between 12 and 15 projects typically finished in a year.
