A man who was almost three times the drink-driving limit when he crashed his bike was sentenced today to attend a court treatment programme.

Kaelin Cox, 26, appeared in Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded guilty to drinking and driving.

Prosecutor Nicole Smith said that on October 30, police attended an accident on Cedar Avenue and saw Cox, from Devonshire, moving his badly damaged bike.

Officers noticed that he was unsteady on his feet and that his breath smelt of alcohol.

Cox was taken to the Hamilton Police Station, where a Breathalyser test revealed that he had 229 milligrams of alcohol within 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit for driving in Bermuda is 80mg/100ml.

Cox apologised to the court and told magistrate Craig Attridge that he had not had a drink since the accident.

Mr Attridge ordered that Cox participate in DUI Court beginning on December 6, fined him $1,500 and suspended him from driving all vehicles until further notice.

Mr Attridge also ordered that a recovery assessment report be conducted for Cox.
