The Bermuda Road Safety Council is urging road users plan ahead and avoid drink driving over the festive season.

Its message for the month of December is Don’t Drink and Drive and its slogan for the month is Designate Your Driver.

A spokeswoman for BRSC said: “As we know, people will consume alcohol more during the holiday season so we encourage everyone to plan ahead, to ensure that you get home safely.

“Hire a taxi/minibus, have a designated driver and call a close friend or relative to pick you up.

“Since 2018, we have seen the introduction of road side sobriety checkpoints and they have made a difference in changing the attitude towards drunk driving.

“Much credit has to been given to officers of the Bermuda Police Service who have dutifully done their job in enforcing the laws and catching those that chose to drive while impaired.”

The BRSC is also encouraging party organisers to incorporate a transportation plan for their guests and has offered assistance in helping design them. Anyone interested can call 292-1271 or e-mail bdarsc@gmail.com

The council added that road users should be mindful of speeding.

“Whilst we highlight drunk driving, we must not forget that speeding is also a concern on our roads. Speeding is a major cause for accidents in Bermuda, and if we can reduce our speeds, we can cut back the preventable accidents,” the spokeswoman added.

“The BRSC feels it is necessary to remind pedestrians and pedal cyclist that they also play a part in road safety. When you are out jogging, walking, or cycling whether for exercise or for pleasure remember to face the traffic coming towards you and if you are out after sundown or even at dusk to wear reflective gear or bright colours. We want you use the roads but to be safe while doing it.

“We want this holiday season to be of joy and cheer, and by being responsible and adhering to the rules of the road we can make this happen.
