The Anglican Cathedral in Hamilton has seen a “steep rise” in demand for their “no questions asked” lunchtime meal programme, driven by the Covid-19 pandemic and the escalating cost of living in Bermuda.

And the church has said the programme can only continue with corporate and community support.

Last month, on Thanksgiving Day, insurance company QBE Bermuda stepped in to help by providing, and serving, more than 200 Thanksgiving lunches to people at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity on Church Street in Hamilton.

The team took part in the initiative for the sixth year in a row, as part of the insurer’s social impact initiative, QBE Foundation.

But Leanne Wheatly, lead underwriting operations, QBE Equator Re, has noted: “Unfortunately, Bermuda is not immune to the growing economic problems that are occurring globally, and there is a very real need for all of us to help out in our community.

“And, as part of a larger initiative, the QBE Foundation and QBE employees will be participating in other projects and activities to help the community during the coming year.”

A spokesman for the meal programme said they were “tremendously grateful” for the Thanksgiving feast QBE provided and served.

“The programme is not sustainable without continued support from the community,” the spokesman said. “An event such as QBE’s Thanksgiving provides a much needed boost.”

The meal programme offers free lunches, every day, from 12pm until 1pm. They typically serve up to 140 people each day.

Last month, the Green family owners of the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club, donated $10,000 to the meal programme.
