Somerset Eagles are looking to build on a strong run of recent results as they take to the field for the Friendship Trophy semi-final against Devonshire Cougars at PHC Field tomorrow.Eagles claimed a valuable point in a 1-1 draw away at high-flying Robin Hood at Goose Gosling Field last weekend to keep their Premier Division survival hopes alive. Tomorrow’s match poses a glaring opportunity for both teams to take one step closer to winning a trophy at this early stage in the season. Eagles will also be looking to avenge the 2-1 defeat they suffered against Cougars at Devonshire Rec last month.Head coach Jensen Rogers is well aware of the task at hand but knows a positive result could prove a turning point in their season.“When you get an excellent result like that we had against Robin Hood, there is no reason to change your plans or personnel,” he said. “Cougars can be a dangerous team on their day; they have quality players like Drewonde Bascome, and some players coming back for Christmas break as well. “They also have one of the most experienced coaches on the island in Vance Brown. We have to approach the game with discipline and caution, and take our chances when they come. “The only way to stand a chance in a tournament is getting over the tougher hurdles; and this could be one of those for us.“If we win on Sunday, we stand a serious chance of winning a trophy. This competition is probably our best chance. Victory would build the confidence in the team heading into the second half of the season in 2020.”Eagles remain just one point and one place from safety in the Premier Division, but have enjoyed some strong form in recent weeks, eliminating Dandy Town in a seven-goal thriller in the quarter finals, before claiming that surprise point against unbeaten title challengers Hood, creating greater cause for optimism. However, with midfielders Anwar Telford and Teniko Eve on holiday and injured respectively, Rogers has a few decisions to make in key areas. He started Azar Morrissey and Dane Simmons in their place last weekend, with Morrissey the stand-in captain.Although they lost to Cougars in reverse game in November, Eagles posed a threat on the counter-attack and will probably lean towards that style of play tomorrow as well, despite leaving a lot of space on the wings which the home side exploited well on the day.The goalkeeper position may also come under scrutiny. With regular custodian Lorenzo Lambert struggling, and unable to play, Rogers could once again look towards Jermaine Rumley between the sticks. Having beaten Eagles previously, Cougars coach Vance Brown is relishing the prospect of locking horns for the second time in a month, while remaining cautious of the threat Rogers’ side pose.“This will be an interesting challenge, they come off a fantastic result, so we have to be at our best,” Brown said. “They have some dangerous players, so we must be disciplined out there on both sides of the ball. “There are no injuries to speak about, so I hope to have a full-strength squad going into the game. “I am greatly looking forward to it, and this is probably our best chance of winning a trophy this season.” The semi-final between Eagles and Cougars kicks off at 2.30pm, with the winner securing a shot at the trophy in the final on New Year’s Day, which will be played at Wellington Oval.
