All Bermudian university students are encouraged to apply for this year’s Summer Employment Programme.

The initiative, offered by the Department of Workforce Development, allows young people to apply their studies within a real workplace.

The Minister of Economy and Labour, Jason Hayward, said: “As part of the Government’s youth employment strategy, the SEP remains an invaluable option for students still completing their education and seeking summer employment.”

People who have benefited from last year’s programme include Matthew Amaral, Wendall Tucker and Osei Agyapong.

Mr Amaral, who is studying engineering at Queen’s University in Canada, said: “[Through the SEP], I have been working with a great team who have been able to show me some real-world experience into what I have been learning about in school.”

Mr Tucker is taking courses at De Montfort University in England and worked with the Department of Workforce Development last summer.

“ I was able to gain experience from this programme, so if I come back to Bermuda, I can use those skills to get a job,” he said.

Mr Agyapong, who is pursuing a Master’s degree in global and planetary health at Durham University, in England, called his time in the summer programme “incredible”.

All programme applicants must be Bermudian, be enrolled full-time at an accredited college or university and have a Grade Point Average of 2.7 or higher.

Students need to create a profile on the Bermuda job board to apply for the opportunity and have until February 22 to do so. A resume, cover letter, two written references and proof of study are required.
