Stranded on Harbour Road

Dear Sir,

My husband and I have been coming to Bermuda for four decades. One of our greatest delights, wherever we were staying — whether a rental house at Somerset Bridge or a B&B on Harbour Road — was the Bermuda ferry service. Not only did these wonderful little boats and their crews whisk us safely and quickly to Hamilton, but the ride was always a joy ... even in stormy weather.

This past April while we were here, the Inner Harbour route — our beloved Coralita and Corona — was still intact. But we arrived this week to find the ferry service reduced to very early morning or very late afternoon, with no boats at all on the weekend.

Not only does this leave visitors needing to take taxis (which worsen traffic) or walk uphill to Middle Road for the bus (which may be too strenuous for some), it subverts one of Bermuda’s most distinctive assets. And so I wonder: do tourists matter any more?
