High blood pressure: a cautionary tale

Dear Sir,

What is blood pressure? Blood pressure is the amount of force your blood uses to get through your arteries. High blood pressure is often referred to as the “Silent Killer” because it may show no symptoms and can cause a stroke. Strokes may range from mild to debilitating.

The normal blood pressure is 120/80; no matter your age, you can take steps to keep your blood pressure in a healthy range. As we age, our blood pressure will vary, but checking your blood weekly or having it checked by a professional can prevent a stroke. Each home should have a blood pressure monitor.

If you are hypertensive, and taking medication to control your blood pressure, you will still need to eat a healthy diet. Salty foods in particular can cause high sodium levels, so read your labels. Avoid eating red meats: many clinical studies have shown that red meat increases blood pressure and is linked with hypertension. Watch your weight, engage in some type of physical activity and be sure to get enough rest.

Sugary foods and foods high in saturated fats can also increase blood pressure. Watch your soft drink and alcohol consumption. Keep your body hydrated by drinking an adequate amount of water daily. A good health practice is drinking an ounce glass of water before you consume your first cup of coffee or tea. Keep an eye on your blood pressure, the “Silent Killer”, and stave off a stroke.
