Ferry services suspended as high winds hit island
Hurricane-force gusts could affect the island today, according to the Bermuda Weather Service.
In an update, the BWS said: “A strengthening low pressure system will continue to advance from the southwest today.
“Winds continue to increase under cloudy skies before wet weather arrives. Strong to gale-force winds develop with possible storm force to hurricane-force gusts.
“Blustery showers linger into Tuesday before the low moves away and high pressure returns. Skies brighten from Tuesday through midweek while winds gradually ease.
“Today, cloudy, developing rain/showers with afternoon thunder likely … winds southeasterly strong, veering southerly and increasing strong to gale force with gale force to storm force gusts from mid to late morning, and gusting to hurricane-force during the afternoon, veering westerly strong by evening.”
This afternoon the Department of Marine and Port Services said the Watford Ferry stop service had been suspended due to inclement weather.
“The Department will decide to reopen the ferry stop prior to the next scheduled run at 4.10pm. All other ferries are running as scheduled at this time. For today’s ferry services updates, contact the Ferry Terminal at 295-4506.”
In an update at 5pm, a spokesperson added: “Both Green and Blue routes are now cancelled until further notice and Pink route is running on its normal schedule.

A spokeswoman for the Ministry of National Security said: “As the public is aware, the Bermuda Weather Service issued a severe weather advisory earlier this morning.
“According to the BWS, this afternoon, the island will experience severe rain with the likelihood of thunderstorms; strong gale-force wind gusts, with some gusts reaching storm force to hurricane force.
“In light of the unsettled weather, the Ministry of National Security encourages the public to take any necessary safety precautions.
“In particular, motorists should exercise extra caution when travelling on the roads during their afternoon commutes.”
It appears more than 1,700 homes are without power, according to the Belco outage map and in a tweet, the company said it was closely monitoring the weather forecast with teams on standby.
