A care home has held a door decorating competition to find the resident who best captured the Christmas spirit.

Nurses, schoolchildren and family members met at the Westmeath Residential and Nursing Care Home to help seniors spread holiday cheer around the home.

Akilah Reid, the activities co-ordinator at the Pembroke home, said that this year’s competition had seen an increased number of entrants.

She explained: “In the last few years, participation kind of dropped, but quite a few family members came out and decorated this year, which was really nice.”

Ms Reid added: “The staff actually have a theme every year and this year was ‘Santa in Bermuda’.

“Someone did Santa relaxing on the beach in Bermuda, others had a moon gate or some Bermuda sand to make a beach.”

A panel of judges went through each of the four units and determined the top three most festive doors on Monday.

The residents who placed first in their unit won a $50 cash prize.

Staff at the residential home also took part in their own category, where the top three spots won a gift basket.

The decorations will stay up until the start of the new year.
