May 8 declared a public holiday for King’s coronation
Bermuda will celebrate the coronation of King Charles with a public holiday, it was announced yesterday.
Rena Lalgie, the Governor, is set to sign a proclamation confirming that Monday, May 8, will be a public holiday to celebrate the event.
The celebrations will kick off on Saturday, May 6 – the actual day of the coronation – with a ceremonial tree planting and the opening of a coronation garden at the Botanical Gardens.
On Sunday, May 7, there will be a service of Thanksgiving at The Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity.
Events are also lined up for the public holiday on Monday, May 8, when a children’s reading festival, sponsored by the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sport, will be held.
A Government spokeswoman said: “It should be noted that the establishment of a coronation garden reflects His Majesty’s work in support of the environment and sustainable farming, and the planned children’s reading festival recognises Her Majesty the Queen Consort’s commitment to literacy, particularly for young people.”
