Bermuda’s Carifta Games athletes announced

Jaeda Grant selected for Carifta Games

The young athletes who will represent Bermuda at this year’s 50th Carifta Games have been announced.

A total of 31 athletes have been selected for the Games, which will take place in Bahamas from April 7 to April 10, in a variety of track and field events.

The Under-20 boys division will be led by Khazi Sealy, who will race in the 5,000 metres, 1,500 metres and the 4x400 relay, with that team made up by Seer Carey, Simeon Hayward and Sancho Smith, with the latter two athletes also competing in the 800 metres.

Jake Brislane has been selected in the 5,000m with J’Auza James taking on the multi-discipline octathlon and Razai Garland competing in the javelin.

Five athletes compete in the Under-20 girls category with Shayla Cann tackling the 400 and 800 metres, Sanaa Rae Morris competing in the 200 and 400 metres, I’Aura Golding running in the 100m hurdles and Zenji Washington doubling up in the 100 and 200m. Those four athletes will also make up the 4x400m metre relay team.

Kesay Bell is the final member of that age group and will participate in the shot and the javelin.

Miles Outerbridge runs the blue riband distances of 100 and 200 metres for the Under-17 boys and also forms part of the 4x100 relay team alongside 200m and 400m runner Daylen Scott and long-distance runner Tajahri Rogers, who will race over 800, 1,500 and 3,000 metres. The last member of the relay squad is Kyah Richardson, who will also compete alongside Outerbridge in the 100m. Cameron Adkins (3,000m) and Jake Smith (1,500m) round off that age group.

The Under-17 girls are led by the talented Jaeda Grant, who has qualified in the 800 and 1,500m. She will be joined in the longer event by Fenella Wightman, who will also compete over 3,000m. Pria Wilson and Arima Turner will race alongside each other in the 100m, with the latter also competing in the 200m alongside Ellise Dickinson, who will be running in the 400m as well.

The 4x400 relay team will be made up of Dickinson, Amaris Munya, Azari Jones and Lashee Jones.

In a statement, the Bermuda National Athletics association was keen to congratulate those chosen as well as paying tribute to Front Street Mile champion Eoghan Homan.

“As the BNAA announces the 50th edition of the Bermuda Carifta team, we would like to take a moment to acknowledge and offer our sincerest condolences to the family of Eoghan Homan,” the statement read.

“Eoghan Homan was a former Front Street Mile champion and member of the DNA [Developing National Athletes] and a student at Somersfield Academy. Regrettably, Eoghan lost his battle with cancer last week.

“Our prayers remain with Eoghan’s family, his school, his schoolmates and track club.”
