A charity that feeds the island’s vulnerable people will close its doors for about two weeks next month so flooring renovations can take place.

Jason Powell, president of Meals on Wheels, said the organisation’s Paget headquarters would close on April 3 so its kitchen tiles could be replaced.

He added: “For this to happen, the kitchen counters, oven and refrigerator all have to be removed and put back together again.”

The charity will be unable to provide meals to medically vulnerable and elderly people during the closure, which is set to begin on April 3.

A spokeswoman said later: “In order to stay ahead of Bermuda Health Department regulations and to continue to maintain the high standards of cleanliness and sanitation for which Meals on Wheels has been known for decades, we will be replacing the flooring in the kitchen, necessitating a two-week shut down for the work to be completed.

“We have been advised that the work will commence on April 3 and will continue until April 14, 2023.

“Regretfully, as a result, we will not be able to provide meal service during this period and are asking our clients and their families/caregivers to make alternative meal arrangements for this time.”

She added: “Meals on Wheels is a long-serving volunteer organisation that prepares and delivers up to 220 freshly cooked meals, four days a week to people within our community who are incapacitated, unable to prepare and cook a nourishing meal on their own, or who have no one else on whom they can depend to do this for them.”

The charity serves meals each Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

Mr Powell said: “There are no contingency plans in place at this time; we have racked our brains to what we can do.

“Moving our services logistically, whatever we explored became too difficult.

“Unfortunately [during the closure], people are going to have to lean more on the people or services they are living on during the other three days of the week.”

He pointed out that all the required supplies – tiles, cement and backing – were already on the island.

Mr Powell added that the charity had planned to replace the tiles.
