Noah Browne and Micah Franklin to face another final showdown
The pre-tournament favourites for the Men’s Open at the Gnosis National Squash Championship both made it safely into the final on a fantastic night of semi-finals on Thursday.
Noah Browne and Micah Franklin will take each other on in the final for the fourth straight year on Friday night after beating Kristian Muldoon and Anaya Smith in straight sets.
Finals night could be a major celebration for the Franklin family, with Micah’s wife Eilidh set to take on Izzy White in the concluding match in the Women’s Open draw after they both won in straight sets.
The Men’s Open Plate semi-finals featured some tight matches with Jordasche Rawson beating Piers Carr in four sets and Korin Knights winning by the same 3-1 margin over Benjamin Bramlett.
Somers Stevenson should be the freshest player on finals night as she was handed a walkover in the semi-final of the Women’s Plate when her opponent Terrie Greenslade was forced to withdraw through illness. Stevenson will play Olivia Sherratt, who beat Mary Hall in straight sets in the other semi-final.
John Fletcher will play Anthony Fellowes in the Men’s Over-40 final after they both came through in straight sets against Nick Leach and Chris Dawson respectively. Leach gained some compensation for that defeat by beating Jeffrey Ingelman to make it into the final of the Men’s Over-50 competition, in which he will meet Bill Dickinson, who received a bye into the final courtesy of the withdrawal of Peter Cooper.
Shane McDonnell came through three tight sets against Kevin Gillespie to make it into the final of the Men’s Over-50 Plate, where he will face Simon Argent.
There were two titanic struggles in the Men’s B divison semi-finals with Elijah Simmons bating Brendon Fourie 11-6 in the deciding fifth set and Eli Carpol being taken the distance before overcoming the stubborn challenge of Malcom Woodley.
Aleem Qureshi and Graham Henderson will contest the Men’s B Plate final with the latter forced to conjure all his stamina reserves to edge past Jason Savoury 11-8 in the final set.
There could be trouble over the dinner table in the Rosorea household on Friday night as brothers Ethan and Owen will take each other on in the Men’s C final, with Kevin Gillespie and Neil Lupsic set to fight it out in the Men’s C Plate final.
