The First Division title race has come down to the wire with only three points separating leaders Paget Lions from third place Young Men’s Social Club with just one game left.

Paget dented fourth-placed Bermuda Athletic Association’s promotion hopes after beating them 3-1on Sunday, with player-coach Antwan Russell leading the charge with two goals and Omari Tucker grabbing the other.

Social Club leapfrogged Wolves into second place after edging hosts Devonshire Colts 1-0 at Police Field on Saturday with Giniko Butterfield grabbing the winner, but Wolves regained the place courtesy of a 2-0 win over bottom team Somerset Eagles at White Hill Field on Sunday, with Morricko Iris and Omeek Smith on target.

Paget will now meet Wolves in a mouth-watering clash at Wellington Oval in the final game next Sunday and have a superior goal difference (+31) than Wolves (+20) and Social Club (+24).

“The job is not totally done yet as mathematically Social Club and Wolves still have a shout so we have to win the next game, which is our focus,” he said.

“If we lose to Wolves, Social Club can tie us and with goal difference can better us.

“Right now we have a better goal difference but we are not going to leave it in anyone’s hands besides our own. We have to win our next game.”

Wolves vice-president Vince Minors Jr says his team are not focused on the various permutations

“Ideally, we would like to win and keep everything in our hands,” he said. “If we win nothing else matters.”

Social Club travel to Southampton Oval to face hosts Southampton Rangers the same day.

“It’s coming down to the wire,” a Social Club spokesperson commented. “The last game determines who goes up and we have to get our points if we want to have any chance.

“All we can do is do what we can to win our game and hopefully it all falls in our favour.”
