Songwriters encouraged to enter Heather Nova competition

Local songwriters are being tasked with putting their skills to the test for the third Heather Nova Singer/Songwriter Competition.

The Bermudian musician said that she launched the competition in 2019 to encourage and support young songwriters in the community and was looking forward to doing so again.

“Having had a 30-year career in this area, I still remember well how daunting it was starting out. Songwriting comes from a personal place, so it’s common to feel nervous about putting ourselves and our songs out there.

“It takes courage to take that leap, and it’s so crucial to find support and affirmation. It’s wonderful to be in a position to give that support to young Bermudian songwriters.”

Hannah Bushara and Salayah Stange previously took the top prize in the competition, which includes a year of mentoring from Ms Nova, a day in the studio with her to record a song and the chance to open for Ms Nova at her next Bermuda show.

Bermudians under the age of 30 are eligible to enter the competition, with entrants required to play an instrument to accompany themselves.

Competitors can enter by recording a private YouTube video of themselves singing and playing two self-written songs and sending the videos to heathernovaadmin@icloud.com by April 15.

Ms Nova said: “I encourage anyone with a passion for songwriting to enter.

“Even if you don’t win, it’s a great thing to do for your confidence as a writer — just putting yourself out there is a wonderful start. I will respond with constructive, supportive and detailed feedback to every entry.

“And truly it’s not even really about winning. It’s about acknowledging to yourself that you are a singer/songwriter.”

Ms Stange said that winning the competition in 2020 was an “incredible experience” and helped her to gain experience and confidence.

“Her advice, encouragement and generosity is a large part of the reason I am the songwriter I am today,” she said.

Ms Bushara also praised her experience after winning the first competition in 2019.

“She has given me the courage and confidence to look within myself, which has, I think, made me a much better and more self-aware person and writer,” she said.

“I would encourage all songwriters in Bermuda to take a leap of faith and enter a submission video. Working with Heather is definitely one of the highlights of my 2019.”
