Rundown Arboretum building set for new lease of life
The Government hopes to convert a dilapidated cottage inside the Arboretum into a new meeting and horticultural centre, according to a recent planning application.
The application, submitted by Brick Verde Architectural Services on behalf of the Government, said it was hoped the project would help to revitalise the Devonshire park.
“The building which is located within the Arboretum Park is dilapidated and in major need of repairs,” the application stated.
“In a bid to renovate the building and revitalise the park, the opportunity to create a facility that operates within the pillars of sustainability – social, environmental, and economic expansion was established through this proposed development.
“In coordination with the Estates Section and the Department of Parks, in particular with Roger Parris who operates the Skills Development Programme, this facility has been designed to operate as a horticultural hub, where agricultural practices will be passed on to the participants – mainly young, disadvantaged men – creating opportunities for future employment.”
The property will include lodging space which could be used by participants or overseas students as part of the programme’s “initiative of global horticultural training and certifications”.
“These individuals will be trained to become future leaders in cultivation, broadening their understanding of management, operations, and production within the industry, enhancing our natural landscapes as well as combating food scarcity,” the application stated.
“The proposed facility also operates as a meeting hub allowing inter-Governmental Departments along with the public business sectors and individuals to book and use these modern meeting amenities in a beautiful park setting, generating additional economic viability for the project.”
The project includes additions and renovations to the existing structure, along with asbestos abatement, a new greenhouse, two pergolas, a new covered veranda and reconfiguration of the building’s interior.
The completed building would include a new reception area and bathrooms, along with an office, dining area, kitchenette and lodging rooms
