Christopher brothers a cut above in Sweeney Todd
Brothers Nicholas and Jonathan Christopher were both on stage on Sunday night when the latest revival of the musical Sweeney Todd had its opening on Broadway.
The brothers, the sons of Hamilton Town Crier Ed Christopher, have been working as professional actors for more than a decade on Broadway and across North America.
In Sweeney Todd, Nicholas Christopher plays Pirelli, a rival barber to the title character, for whom he is also the replacement. Jonathan Christopher is in the ensemble and is the replacement for three name roles.
Today, the New York Times described the musical, which stars Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford, as “ravishingly sung, deeply emotional and strangely hilarious”.
The Guardian said: “Bloody, bold and opulent, the revival spares neither expense nor blushes.”
In a Facebook post on March 17, after Nicholas Christopher played the title role in a final preview, Jonathan Christopher said: “Nicholas Christopher as Sweeney Todd. 3.16.2023. A night (and DAY) I will never forget.
“And a little throwback to 1998. Nicholas never EVER did anything half way, it’s been all or nothing, from day one. And tonight he bared it all onstage while we all held our breath in awe.”
The brothers have been in the same musical before, just not on the same stage or at the same time – Nicholas Christopher played George Washington in Hamilton on Broadway while Jonathan Christopher was cast later in the national tour in the US and now makes his Broadway debut.
