Rotary raises $7,700 to help fund treatment for diabetics
Two Bermudians can continue getting the diabetes treatment they need for the next 18 months after Rotarians donated $7,700 towards their health costs.
Nephrologist Raphael Loutoby presented the cheque, on behalf of the Hamilton Rotary Club, to Sara Bosch de Noya, from the Bermuda Diabetes Association last week.
The funds were raised through Hamilton Rotary Club’s 5K Run and Walk for kidney disease awareness, held in November.
Thanks to the donation, the two patients can continue using the FreeStyle Libre system to monitor their blood sugar.
The Free Style Libre system is inserted into the back of a patient’s arm and provides real-time glucose readings 24 hours a day, without people having to prick their fingers.
According to Dr Loutoby, this treatment costs around $250 a month in Bermuda.
Ms Bosch de Noya said: “These patients are beneficiaries of the latest glucose-technology, which, we hope in ten years’ time, will see these young people are not developing retinopathy or kidney disease.”
