Police will be manning road sobriety checkpoints across the island during the Easter holiday weekend.

The operation in seven parishes will begin tomorrow evening and will run through to Sunday.

Officers from the community policing division, tactical operations and the roads policing unit will man the checkpoints, which are in addition to general patrol officers enforcing Operation Vega.

A similar exercise conducted over four days in February resulted in 11 motorists being arrested for driving while impaired.

Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, urged residents today to refrain from drinking and driving and other antisocial behaviours.

Mr Weeks said: “I encourage residents to reflect on their faith and celebrate with their family and friends responsibly.

“I wish to remind everyone that while celebrating, they should think of their safety and the safety of others. I urge people to avoid drinking and driving and engaging in antisocial behaviour.

“Such behaviour is not only disrespectful to our culture but also puts the safety of our community members at risk.

“I also wish to express my deepest gratitude to those staff within the Ministry of National Security who are working this holiday weekend to keep us safe, including police officers, corrections officers, the Royal Bermuda Regiment, customs officers, firefighters and the Coast Guard.

“They deliver on our mission of working together to keep you safe.”
