Bermuda’s first medal at the 50th Carifta Games in Bahamas has been won by Kahzi Sealey in the under-20 1,500 metres.

Sealey’s performance was the highlight of Bermuda’s displays on the opening day of competition, with his strong late finish just not enough to reel in Ainsley Campbell, of Jamaica, who won by less than a second in a time of 4min 5.54sec.

Bermuda’s other runner in the race, Kallan Richardson, finished tenth.

While there was joy for Sealey, a couple of Bermuda’s brightest young athletes may have been left disappointed after just finishing out of the medals.

Jaeda Grant ran her heart out but finished in an agonising fourth place in the girls’ under-17 1,500 metres in 4:56.54.

After holding third position early, Grant dropped back to sixth with a lap left to run, but, despite passing a couple of rivals, she was unable to reel in Erin Barr, of Bahamas, who won bronze behind Ashlyn Simmons, of Barbados. Bermuda’s Fenella Wightman also ran well to finish seventh.

One of this year’s Front Street Mile champions, Tajahri Rogers also finished just outside the podium places in fourth in the boys’ under-17 1,500. Rogers was in the medal positions for almost the entire distance and was occupying bronze-medal position with 400 metres to run, but he was passed late on by Jamaica’s Joel Morgan. Jake Smith finished ninth in the same race.

In other events, Razi Garland finished sixth in the under-20 men’s javelin and eighth in the under-20 men’s discus.
