Jamaicans thumped by ton-up Crockwell

Aaron Crockwell became the Commercial Cricket League’s second century-maker this season when he smashed an unbeaten 110 and also took two wickets to guide St. David’s to an emphatic victory over Jamaican Association.

Treadwell Gibbons jr, enjoying a break from his duties with his Premier League club, stroked a quickfire unbeaten half-century to engineer Western Stars’ 10-wicket hammering of new side BC Allrounders.

Former Cup Match star Ricky Hill’s unbeaten 49 ensured North Village gained maximum points in an eight-wicket canter over West Indian Association while Ricky’s brother Corey, another ex-Cup Match player, helped Hamilton Parish thwart defending champions Forties, who were forced to hang on for a losing draw.

Twenty-three-year-old Crockwell was the toast of St. David’s — who have nicknamed themselves The Heavy Hitters after rejoining the league following a season’s break — as they walloped Jamaican Association by 73 runs at Garrison Field.

Crockwell’s unbeaten century included seven sixes and five fours in youthful St. David’s’ 195 for nine in a game reduced to 40 overs a side and he followed it up by claiming two for 38 from seven overs.

But medium-paced opening bowler Gregory Outerbridge took the honours with the ball, snapping up six for 40 in 11 overs as the Jamaicans were bundled out for 122 in 28 overs.

“He really applied himself,” said JA manager Glenmore Barrett of Crockwell’s accomplished century.

Only Donovan Livingston (31) and Presley Millwood (25) offered any resistance for the Jamaicans. Earlier there were two wickets apiece for skipper Junior Lindo and Keniek Wallen.

Western Stars owed their crushing win over BC Allrounders at Saltus Grammar School to Gibbons’ unbeaten 83, which included nine sixes and two fours, and a five for 45 haul in nine overs by teenage medium pacer Machai Campbell.

Campbell’s burst, coupled with Gibbons’ two for eight from four overs and Milford Waldron’s two for 15, also from four, helped Stars dismiss BC Allrounders for 126 in 22 overs, Derek Smith topscoring with 29 and Clinton Outerbridge making 24 not out.

Gibbons and fellow left-hander Ryan Tyrell, who made 30 not out, knocked off the runs in just 14 overs with an unbroken opening stand of 129.

“Machai bowled really well, getting a lot of movement through the air — until we lost the ball!” said Stars’ skipper Chris Smith. “BC Allrounders were finding their feet, dropping a few short and getting flicked behind for six.”

Forties were handily placed at 109 for two chasing Parish’s 194 for five at Royal Naval Field but were pegged back and lost wickets steadily before closing on 163 for eight, Parish taking seven points to Forties’ three.

Mike Burgess, who struck seven boundaries in his 67, and Ashton Outerbridge (35) gave Parish a fine start with an opening stand of 72 and other useful contributions came from Cal Burgess (39 not out) and Curtis Lee (23). Rohan Davis was Forties’ best bowler with four for 45 from 11 overs.

Opener Gerald Bean made 60 from 79 balls, including nine fours and a six, but apart from Davis (25) and Yatin Gawas (24) Forties’ progress was checked by the bowling of Mike Burgess (three for 12 from five overs) and Cal Burgess (two for 37 from eight).

Although Hill was bowled for a duck, he claimed the wicket of acting skipper Braxton Stowe in his one for 37 from nine overs.

Fast bowler Anthony Brathwaite was dropped three times but his 50, which included two sixes and six fours, helped WIA post 159 in 35 overs at Shelly Bay, Mike Young jr taking two for 27 from six overs and Rudy Smith two for 48 from nine.

WIA’s lightweight attack — missing Jerry Callender, Junior Watts and Rowan Ramotar, who were all unavailable — offered little threat as Village replied with 164 for two in 29.1 overs.

Hill’s 49 not out included four fours and a six while Allen Walker made 31 not out, Dion Ball jr 25 and Mike Levon jr 21.

“If we’d had our usual bowlers we’d have given them more of a run for their money,” said WIA’s Barry Richards.
