An e-waste drive will be launched this weekend to encourage the recycling of electrical items.

The public are asked to bring old laptops, computers, cable boxes, mobile phones and other electronics to the Tynes Bay Waste Treatment Facility to be recycled.

Fees for commercial vehicles delivering loads of e-waste will be waived as part of the launch.

Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the Minister of Public Works, said: “E-waste that is tossed into landfills or otherwise incorrectly disposed of, leaches toxic substances, including lead, mercury, cadmium, beryllium, polyvinyl chloride and chromium into the earth, polluting the soil, groundwater and the air.

“Responsibly disposing of e-waste helps protect our environment and keeps Bermuda beautiful for all.”

The drive by the Department of Operations and Engineering will be held between 7.30am and 3pm on Saturday at Tynes Bay.
