'Bermuda's Myspace' targets youth
It is certainly amongst the first, if not the very first, Bermuda-based web site with a "dot tv" domain address, highlighting the fact it features rich media content.
In the ever-evolving world of internet community sites Vybezalliance.tv is moving ahead of the trend-setting Myspace formula to offer the next generation of interactive web-site.
It is the members of the site community who by-and-large provide the content, be it streaming video, music, photos and personal pages that have a similar format to Myspace.
There is even a once-a-week radio show from the web-site.
The men behind the venture are Phil Davis, Qian Dickinson and Unday Smith who between them have a technical know-how, e-business and marketing background. Since launch on April 15 the site has already signed up 340 members, with many of those adding picture and video content.
It is free to join, and apart from the simple social networking aspect, the site also acts as a vehicle for musicians or artists looking to promote their work at no cost. It has a classified buy-and-sell section and an online calendar where promoters can advertise their event and plan around other events that have already been placed on the events' calendar.
"It is like Bermuda's version of Myspace where you can upload music if you are an artist or DJ," explained Mr. Davis, 30.
"It supports local entertainment by helping artists get their name out there or for promoters to let people know about a party that is planned."
The site is primarily for fresh news and entertainment. It is aimed at the 18-34 age range, according to Mr. Davis, who said that even Premier Ewart Brown has expressed an interest in using the site as an outlet to deliver video messages to the younger generation.
Photos can be viewed and voted on, music and video can be streamed and the web-site even has its own radio show on Thursday evenings. Exclusive music and performances from the likes of Collie Buddz have already made it onto the web-site.
But with so much free content how is it going to make money as a business?
Mr. Davis said that would come through advertising, with the site being a particularly useful place for companies involved in technology products, cell phones, clothing and other items to reach the 18-34 age group.
"We are looking to promote advertising space. For companies trying to reach the youth market this is the perfect vehicle. We are focusing on the local niche market," said Mr. Davis.
It has taken six months to build the web site from scratch, including working through long nights because one of the site technical support assistants was in Shanghai.
The web site features a media pack that potential advertisers can use to check rates and conditions. The Vybezalliance team intends to have a one/two day turnover responding to inquiries and emails.
But at the heart of the venture is a desire to help fellow Bermudians find an outlet for their talents and connect with others.
Mr. Dickinson, 28, who is also a DJ, said: "There is so much talent in Bermuda and this site allows better networking for artists and DJs, producers, promoters."
