Bailey’s Bay secured two wins on the opening weekend of the season, including a thrilling one-wicket win over St David’s at Lord’s yesterday.

Bay did well to restrict St David’s to just 120 in 36 overs after the home team won the toss and opted to bat. Seam bowler Kyle Hodsoll led the bowling with four for 22 after trapping opener Lionel Cann leg before for six when the score was 18.

St David’s had just 51 on the board when they lost their fourth wicket in the 20th over, before a fifth-wicket stand of 50 in 12 overs between OJ Pitcher and Ajaun Lamb brought up the 100 in the 32nd over.

Pitcher, playing his first match in almost two years after suffering an illness when playing against Bay in the first round of the Eastern Counties Cup in 2017, was impressive with the bat, top scoring with 35 from 93 balls in 115 minutes.

He opened the batting with Lionel Cann and was left to repair the early damage with the partnership with Lamb who scored 25 from 35 balls, hitting three fours and a six.

Allan Douglas was the only other St David’s batsman in double figures, scoring 13 not out as three of his four partnerships in the tail end went for nought. Hodsoll snapped up the last three wickets as St David’s slumped from 101 for five to 120 all out.

Nyhrobi Carmichael claimed two for 30, with Derrick Brangman, Rodney Trott and Zeko Burgess all taking a wicket apiece with Trott giving up just four runs in his five overs.

Although Bay laid a good foundation in their run chase with an opening stand of 60 in 83 minutes between Trott and Coolidge Durham, the match changed after OJ Pitcher, the sixth bowler used, broke the opening stand with a wicket on the fourth ball of his first over, trapping Durham leg before.

Three balls later Cejay Outerbridge had Trott smartly caught down the leg side by wicketkeeper Lamb.

Bay pushed towards their target at a steady rate, but St David’s picked up wickets at key periods to keep the match in the balance as the visiting side slumped to 108 for six. Captain Terryn Fray, who scored a century against Flatts Victoria the previous before, departed for 24 on 112 for eight after hooking a short delivery from George O’Brien and giving Allan Douglas an easy catch on the mid-wicket boundary.

Hodsoll then used his experience in the tail end to take Bay to victory with one wicket in hand, scoring the winning run after scampering through for a quick single with Jordan Burgess after Outerbridge failed to pick up the ball cleanly at short mid-wicket for the chance of a run out.

“What’s crazy about this fixture, especially down here in St David’s, is every year it is a low-scoring match,” Fray said. “I don’t think any team has scored over 150 in the last three or four seasons, so we know it is going to be really tight.

“They have a really strong bowling attack. We probably made a meal of it, but we got the victory and that’s all we’re worried about right now. Rodney and Coolie had a good opening stand, definitely a turnaround from yesterday’s performance against Flatts when I got a nice knock.

“I felt good today, too, but gave my wicket away in the end. I tried to go for the big shot and it didn’t pay off. We have two wins now and my team is pumped.”

O’Brien, captaining St David’s, in the absence of Chris Douglas, claimed two for 20 while Outerbridge, his new ball partner, took two for 32 from nine overs. Justin Pitcher, the seventh bowler used, claimed two for seven off five overs.

n Fray struck 105 off 118 balls from seven fours and a six as Bay posted 243 in 49 overs against Flatts on Saturday at Sea Breeze Oval. They then dismissed Flatts for 101 in 31.5 overs to secure a 142-run victory.

Flatts had Bay reeling at 27 for four before Fray and Pierre Smith, 42 off 47 balls, added 105 for the fifth wicket. Stephen Outerbridge then added 37 at No 8 batting with Fray, who was seventh out when the score 210 in the 41st over.

Four Flatts bowlers Nelson Bascome, Kijaun Franks, Regino Smith and Dajun Carey claimed two wickets each.

Flatts crumbled to 101 all out despite openers Reginald Baker and Carey putting on 71 for the first wicket in 17.3 overs.

Regino Smith was the only other Flatts batsman in double figures, as they quickly slumped to 90 for six as spinners Derrick Brangman and Rodney Trott did the damage.

Brangman claimed six for 19 from 9.5 overs and Trott three for 25 off nine.
