Three is the magic number for Smith
Jonté Smith helped himself to a second hat-trick for PS Kemi Kings in the Finnish team’s 5-3 home win over lowly Jakobstads Bollklubb at City Sport Arena on Saturday.
The Bermuda striker converted in the 43rd, 61st and 64th minutes to take home the match ball. He also had a hand in his team’s remaining goals. The Kings were awarded a penalty in the sixteenth minute after Smith was brought down in the area.
Tom Kononen, the Kings captain, converted the spot-kick on the second attempt after his initial effort was parried by the goalkeeper.
Smith, 19, then took over from there.
He doubled the home side’s lead after latching on to a ball over the back-pedalling defence and lobbing the onrushing goalkeeper to put the Kings firmly in control at the interval. There was more carnage to come after the break, as Smith struck twice inside of three minutes to complete another clinical display of marksmanship.
He netted his second and the Kings’ third with a first-time right-footed shot from close range after helping to link a sweeping counter- attack from midfield and running into open space to receive a cross from the right.
Smith then completed a fine treble when he timed his run perfectly after being played through, sidestepped the goalkeeper and calmly stroked the ball into the empty net. The teenager has now bagged nine goals in four appearances for the Kings since his springtime move to Finland from Crawley Town, of Sky Bet League One.
“Very happy to have scored another hat-trick and take my goal tally to nine this season,” Smith said. “As a team we took our chances well and we were extremely happy to get the win.”
Smith set up the King’s fifth goal with a pass inside the penalty area to fellow attacker Billy Ions, who beat the goalkeeper with a low drive inside the bottom left corner in the 71st minute.
At 5-0 up, complacency set in and the Kings nearly paid the price, as the visiting side struck three times in the final ten minutes of regulation time to make the scoreline more respectable.
“Even though we made it a bit difficult for ourselves in the last 20 minutes, we deserved to win the game,” Smith said.
The goals JKB scored were the first conceded by the Kings this season, ending a run of 341 minutes.
Tommy Taylor, the Kings coach and former West Ham United defender, was not amused with his team’s sloppy defending towards the end. “We let in three simple goals,” he said. “I am not satisfied.”
The win was the unbeaten Kings’ second biggest of the season and leaves them a point behind Kajanni, the Kakkonen League North leaders, with a superior goal difference and a game in hand,
