Happy Hour style: go from work to play
When the clock strikes 5:05pm today, many people will already be making their way to a local Happy Hour event.
Why not do it in style?
We asked four well-dressed people to share how they chose clothes equally suited to work and play.
Ryce Trott told us she usually picks a foolproof outfit for Fridays: a cute dress and high heels.
The 21-year-old said: “I usually have on a high pump and a dress which makes me feel good. I like when I’m in a dress because it’s a little more flirty.”
Ms Trott, who works as an assistant accountant when she’s on break from university, said her style was normally quite simple.
She gets a lot of inspiration browsing through her friends’ closets; she also likes how her sister dresses.
“I’d say her wardrobe is very classy with a touch of bohemian,” she said.
Marketing professional Sophie Francis, 26, manages to swaps out her usual low heels for something a little more dramatic on Fridays.
“If it’s a Friday I bring a second pair of heels that are a bit higher and more ‘out there’ for Happy Hour,” she said.
“I usually try to carry a little make-up in my bag as well so I can kick it up a notch for the evening.
“I might do a bold lip or do something more dramatic with my eye shadow. I often wear a pretty neutral shade on my eyes, so I might add some colour to make my eyes pop or do something a little different with my hair.”
Ms Francis does not consider herself a fashion follower, but said she tried to keep her style as professional as possible.
“Often with my accessories I try to match them to my make-up so it has an all over, consistent look,” she explained.
“I wouldn’t do a crazy graphic eye with a work outfit, but if I’m going on a night out and want to jazz up a black or more muted outfit I tend to go more wild on the make-up and accessories.”
Ms Francis said she got inspiration from Instagram, magazines, as well as a few of her favourite blogs. They help her to think of different ways to style and accessorise pieces she already has in her closet.
Markez Laws, a business analyst, said he opted for something more casual for work on Fridays.
“My Friday attire is normally my work polo, but if I’m going to Happy Hour I’d wear my favourite pair of denim jeans and a slim-fitted button-up shirt and some tan Clarks,” he said.
The 28-year-old said his everyday style was semi-casual, but had a “modern vibe to it”.
“It also has to be comfortable,” he said. “You can mostly find me in jeans and a button-down shirt.
“Sometimes I like to wear graphic tees that will generate a laugh and some slip-in shoes like Toms. My advice is to always customise your outfit: find a way to make it yours.”
Seasonal trends are not really suited to his build, so he tries to prioritise the fit of his clothes over anything else.
“You will recognise a well-fitted suit (depending on material) over the Hugo Boss suit every time,” he said. “That’s how I differentiate myself. I am an impulse buyer, but meticulous, so no matter where I shop it has to match my style and I have to try it on.
“No matter what the event I try to be ready for it. There’s a saying, ‘dress for the position you want’, and I don’t think that’s just for the business environment. Your clothes reflect your character, so make sure it speaks boldly.”
Renika Anderson tries to keep her Happy Hour fashion pretty casual. “Normally I just wear a cute dress with some sandals,” she said. “It’s easy to put on, but you can dress it up with some lipstick for a little extra oomph.
“The sandals are great as well because after a long day on my feet [in retail] I just want to be comfortable. Plus, I don’t want to lug more shoes around.”
Ms Anderson, 25, said her friends described her style as “preppy chic”, but she prefers to think of it as eclectic.
“I don’t necessarily wear what anyone else is wearing. I just wear whatever really. I like patterns and bright colours and anything that stands out.
“One of my biggest inspirations is Rihanna. I like that she wears whatever she wants and [looks like] she just doesn’t care. She always ends up looking effortless.”
